MONDAY 12

9.30 / 13.00 – Pitching is a game – an introduction – Sibylle Kurz, Sabine Bubeck-Paaz and Stefano Tealdi

Pitching is a pleasure – and creative people are doing it at a daily basis in order to convince their partners. It is in the end a very effective invitation for a longer discussion about your work in progress. But public pitching for a lot of people becomes a stressful event.
Nevertheless it is an important tool for making your project known to future coproduction partners and to a bigger audience.
The pitching specialists Sibylle Kurz, Sabine Bubeck-Paaz and Stefano Tealdi know all the internationally practiced pitching formula and will introduce you to the rules of the game.

21.00 / 22.30 – Do film-makers really need a producer? – Stefano Tealdi

You need a producer, something we hear very often. But what does it mean?
Do they do all the ‘dirty’ work and let you make the film you want to? Improbable. Finding the right one means knowing what a producer does and how.
This session is on how I work as a producer: which projects I look for and where I find them.  How I build the relation with the film-maker.
What I do in development, production, post-production, promotion and marketing of the film. How much does it cost the film-maker?

WEDNESDAY 14

8.00 / 9.00 – Accreditation

9.00 / 13.00 – Rough cut workshop

The workshop is designed to give professional selected film-makers from Sicily an opportunity to show their rough cuts to an international panel of experts, and to receive detailed feedback on them. The overall aim is to enhance understanding of the international documentary market by exploring how stories, even if local in theme, can be told in ways that makes them attractive to an international audience, and therefore to an international market.

Prova contraria / Evidence to the contrary
The stories of 5 Sicilian boys, all entered the juvenile criminal circuit for various crimes such as drug dealing, burglary, robbery, violence, abuse. I chose these stories after a long research made together with  social assistants  who deals with minors in Palermo, for their exemplariness, but also for the incredible humanity I found in these  protagonists.  Their past often too painful, made of abuse, abandonment, deprivation of every kind, ignorance, mistreatment and paths of life  they didn’t often  choose but they underwent powerless, without a social and institutional network that would be able to help them.

Chiara Agnello – Director
Born in Palermo; she lives in Rome  where she works as casting director  for the most important national film and television productions. She made several  small spots for the web, the last commissioned by Greenpeace for the last Italian referendum. She is the author of many short films and music videos. EVIDENCE TO THE CONTRARY is her first documentary.

Memory For Sale
A Sicilian theater director in the midst of a personal, professional and artistic crisis decides to go on a journey by train in search of the forgotten memories of 761 people deported to Nazi death camps. He seeks witnesses to tell him about a Nazi prison camp in Sicily, but no one wants to talk about it. Meanwhile, elsewhere in Europe the concentration camp in Belzec is being auctioned off to the highest bidder, spurring deep questions regarding the human condition and how we conserve our common cultural and historical memories.

Paolo Iraci – Director
Paolo Iraci is born in Palermo (Sicily) in 1970. He is a Director, Cinematographer, Writer and Producer. He studied Direction of Photography in Rome (NUCT) and he worked on set with Marco Tullio Giordana, Roberta Torre, Marco Bellocchio, Emidio Greco, Vincente Aranda, Giuseppe Tornatore, etc. Through his production company HERMAN FILM, he produced and then developed several documentaries and film projects.

Barbara Redini – Post Production And Co-Producer
Barbara Redini is a Film-maker, Editor and Producer. She has worked in audiovisual and arts since 1996. In that same year she founded a cultural movement that started in Palermo and spread far beyond, with the central idea of creating newborn pan-European culture based on innovation and the fusion of various autonomous traditions. At the moment, she runs a production house in Catalonia (SPAIN) focused on international audiovisual products.

Ercta, l’arca in città
Between sacred and profane, earth and sky Mount Pellegrino is standing above the city of Palermo. This documentary gives a voice to the people who have lived, explored, painted and venerated this mountain, considered holy for many.

Vittoria Fiumi – Producer
Vittoria Fiumi is film director and producer who graduated in Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester (UK).  She was selected for the following EU Media trainings: IDFA Academy, ESoDoc, The Balkan Documentary Center workshops. She is also a Nipkow fellowship holder. She is currently the executive producer of Ercta – l’Arca in città by Federico Savonitto e Ruben Monterosso.

Immagine dal vero / Picture from life
“Immagine dal vero” is a movie that narrates the success stories of five women and seven men who, after migrating to Sicily, were able to redeem themselves and contribute to improving the communities they belong to today, and in which they are now perfectly integrated. Adopting a technique from Reality TV, the movie also recounts the life of a pregnant woman from Ghana, who eventually gives birth to Marzia.

Luciano Accomandò – Director
Born in Palermo, the city where he chose to live and work. He holds a degree in Theatre and Multimedia Production Studies from the University of Palermo and works as a cinema and theatre producer and director.

The talks are a unique opportunity to learn from some of the most innovative and inspiring global perspectives on documentary film-making. Case histories will be described in person by those who lived them in order to examine the fundamental issues, problems and successes together with the audience.

The 2016 Academy Talks are on the theme of the “Expanded Documentary”: 360° virtual reality, video games, animation, social networks and outreach. Recounting reality is benefiting from the new storytelling possibilities and new audiences made possible by innovative technologies, languages and platforms. This evolving process is undergoing rapid transformation, redefining market sectors and production pipelines. It is generating not only new ideas but also new forms of cross-sector and cross-competence collaboration, as well as new commissioning and distribution scenarios.

Non-fiction content in the online video galaxy
Simone Arcagni Professor, New Media, Università di Palermo | Italy

Reality, Factual, Webdocumentary, Data Visualisation, Doc Series, New Journalism…a wealth of non-fiction content is colonising the online video galaxy.
This universe of forms and practices inherent to new technologies (mobile, VR, AR…) is of great interest to publishers, science, cultural heritage, branding and broadcasting. Simone Arcagni, author of the book “Visioni Digitali”; (Einaudi 2016) outlines the landscape of the multiform universe of new non-fiction digital content.

The New ‘aha': Documentary storytelling revamped.
Vassiliki Khonsari Film-maker & Visual Anthropologist, iNK Stories | USA

Emerging technologies are expanding the landscape of documentary storytelling. As this wave of innovation sweeps the genre, video games and VR are among the platforms fostering ‘aha’ moments and pushing on the possibilities of empathy.  Presenting 1979 Revolution Game, coined a Verite Game — Khonsari will delve into what the New Yorker calls “A Truly Revolutionary Game”. Set amongst the era shifting events of the first modern Islamic Revolution, 1979 Revolution, redefines documentary storytelling with interactive/immersive video game play. Vassiliki Khonsari, co-founder of iNK Stories, will unravel and highlight the approach, production and design involved in preserving authenticity whilst at the same time exploring the power within new forms of impact forward storytelling.

When a documentary can transmute in education, communication, theatre, TV Show and much more.
Luca Vullo Writer, Director, Producer of cinema and Italian gestures Expert | Italy

A documentary is not just a movie but is a personal research that becomes collective, a human experience, a strong emotional growing, a stimulation for all our senses, is art, culture, communication, knowledge, information.
In a era where we are looking to extend the vision with the new technologies there are other examples that go in opposite way.
For instance a documentary could be used like a tool to approach the people, to create human contact and real communication between people.
Therefore is  possible the transmediality from the cinema language to the other media, like theatre, Tv, Radio and Education.
It’s interesting, in this contemporary era, to use a documentary to cover the gap between the work  with  “the artificial intelligence” to be more close the reality, and the verification that the humans have lost their “emotional intelligence”.

Animated reality
The challenges of the animated documentary
Jan- Dirk Bouw Independent Film-maker, JDB Films | The Netherlands

Documentaries and animated films are rarely combined. But when they are, they have a strong, new and surprising strength of expression and storytelling. Jan-Dirk Bouw’s talk gives a unique insight in his working method, and offers the opportunity to understand this new and exciting form of expanded documentary by connecting genres. After showing his award winning animated documentary I LOVE HOOLIGANS (2013) he will address artistic choices, production and workflow and he will give an update of his latest project BREAKING WALLS, which he developed during the ESoDoc (European Social Documentary) 2015. By illustrating two case studies he will reflect on the formal challenges of this hybridization form.

Responsive and Responsible Movies
The New Soul of Documentary
Wendy Levy Executive Director, National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture, Senior Consultant, Sundance/Skoll Stories of Change Program | California (USA)

We are in an era when documentary film-making is at another sharp, cutting edge; powerful true stories spring from hard breaking news, political and social polemics, deeply personal lived experience, wildly augmented and virtual realities – and so much more.  Collaboration and co-creation have emerged as models of innovation, outreach and impact strategy is part of pre-production not just distribution, and technology has enabled documentary work to push traditional boundaries of artist and audience, author and subject, real and imagined. This presentation will challenge us to consider new questions facing the documentary community in a time of global crisis and change, and offer bold examples of visionary film projects that are laying some new ground. Is there a new soul of documentary?
