Cecilia Mangini (Mola di Bari, 1927) is one of the most significant figures in the history of Italian cinema, as a pioneer of photography and documentary. She was the first woman to shoot documentaries after the war, making films in collaboration with Pasolini, Fortini and Pratolini. She captured, from the late 1950’s to the mid 1970’s, an Italy divided between economic boom and social contradictions. She devoted particular attention to the issues of marginality, work and immigration. As scriptwriter she has over forty short films to her name, most of them created alongside her husband Lino Del Fra. These often featured Southern Italy, in search of the rituals of an ancient culture that was disappearing, overwhelmed by the changes that came with the economic boom. She was awarded in 2009 with the Medal of the President of the Republic and in 2017 with a career award in Madrid. In 2014 she returned to directing, forty years since her last film.
